Dealing with Performance Nerves

Tip from Simone Goldsmith

Simone is a multi-award winning performer, and a former Principal Artiste with The Australian Ballet

Feeling anxious of nervous before a performance is absolutely normal, it is just the adrenalin running through your body in excitement – if you are not feeling it, that’s when you should worry!

Try this deep breathing exercise to help calm you down.

1. Find a comfortable, quiet place

2. Place one hand on your chest and the other hand on your stomach

3. Breathe in slowly for a count of 5 and hold the space for 2 counts, then breathe out for a count of 5, Repeat as many times as you feel helps you calm down.

4. Adding a visualisation to this breathing can also be very helpful. Try to envision your performance from beginning to end going as smoothly and joyfully as possible, performing each step perfectly and seamlessly, just the way that you want. This will especially help when it comes to time to perform tricky dance sequences. It’s even helpful to go as far as seeing yourself take the final bow, to picture that sense of accomplishment in a job done well.

Don’t forget, performing is all about having fun, right? If you make a mistake on stage don’t let it show on your face. The audience will never know!
